The Hill We Climb
पर्वत जो हम लांघते
.

When day comes we ask ourselves,
where can we find light in this never-ending shade?
जब द‍िन उगता है, हम खुद से पूछते हैं,
इस अंतहीन छाया में हमें उजाला कहां म‍िलेगा?

.

The loss we carry,
a sea we must wade
जो नुकसान हमने उठाया,
एक सागर हमें पार करना होगा

.

We’ve braved the belly of the beast
We’ve learned that quiet isn’t always peace
हम वि‍कट पर‍िस्‍थ‍ित‍ियों से जूझे
हम सीख गये क‍ि चुप बैठना सदा शांत‍ि का पयार्य नहीं होता
.

And the norms and notions
of what just is
Isn’t always just-ice
और जो बस है उसके मानदंड और व‍िचार
सदैव न्‍यायपूर्ण नहीं होते।

.

And yet the dawn is ours
before we knew it
फिर भी भोर हमारी हो चुकी है
इससे पहले क‍ि हमने यह जाना

.

Somehow we do it
हम किसी तरह यह कर लेते हैं
.

Somehow we’ve weathered and witnessed
a nation that isn’t broken
but simply unfinished

किसी तरह हम मौसमों की मार खाकर
उस राष्‍ट्र के साक्षी बने जो खंडित तो नहीं है
पर पूरा बना ही नहीं।
.

We the successors of a country and a time
Where a skinny Black girl
descended from slaves and raised by a single mother
can dream of becoming president
only to find herself reciting for one

हम उस देश और समय के उत्‍तराधि‍कारी हैं जहां
एक दुबली काली लड़की
दासों की वंशज और अकेली मां द्वारा पाली गयी
राष्‍ट्रपत‍ि बनने का सपना देख सकती है
और खुद को एक राष्‍ट्रपत‍ि के ल‍िए कव‍िता पढ़ते पाती है

.

And yes we are far from polished
far from pristine
but that doesn’t mean we are
striving to form a union that is perfect

और हां हम चमक-दमक
और नयेपन से दूर हैं
किंतु इसका अर्थ यह नहीं कि
हम एक पूर्ण एकता के न‍िर्माण में संघर्षरत हैं।

We are striving to forge a union with purpose
To compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters and
conditions of man
हम अपनी एकता को सोद्देश्‍यता के साथ गढ़ रहे हैं
एक ऐसा देश बनाने के ल‍िए जो सभी संस्‍कृतियों, रंग, चर‍ित्र और मानवदशाओं को समर्प‍ित है
.

And so we lift our gazes not to what stands between us
but what stands before us
और इसल‍िए हम अपनी दृष्‍टि उठाते हैं उसे देखने के ल‍िए नहीं जो हमारे बीच खड़ा है बल्‍क‍ि उसे जो हमारे सामने खड़ा है
.

We close the divide because we know, to put our future first,
we must first put our differences aside
हम उस अंतर को पाटते हैं क्‍योंकि हम जानते हैं कि
अपने भव‍िष्‍य को प्राथमि‍कता देने के ल‍िए
पहले हमें अपने अंतरों को दूर करना होगा

.

We lay down our arms
so we can reach out our arms
to one another
We seek harm to none and harmony for all

हम अपने हथ‍ियार डालते हैं
ताकि हम एक-दूसरे के ल‍िए अपने हाथ बढ़ा सकें
हम क‍िसी की हान‍ि नहीं बल्‍कि
सबके ल‍िए समरसता चाहते हैं

.

Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true:
कुछ और न सही
कहे व‍िश्‍व यही
क‍ि सच यह है:
.

That even as we grieved, we grew
That even as we hurt, we hoped
That even as we tired, we tried
That we’ll forever be tied together, victorious

कि दुखी होकर भी, हम आगे बढ़े
क‍ि चोट‍िल होकर भी, हमनें उम्‍मीदें बांधी
कि‍ थककर भी, हमने प्रयास किया
क‍ि हम सदा एक साथ बंधे रहेंगे, व‍िजयी भाव से
.

Not because we will never again know defeat
but because we will never again sow division

इसल‍िए नहीं कि‍ हम पुन: पराजय का सामना नहीं करेंगे
बल्‍कि इसल‍िए क‍ि हम फ‍िर कभी बंटवारे के बीज नहीं बोंयेंगे।

Scripture tells us to envision
that everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree
And no one shall make them afraid

शास्‍त्र कहते हैं कि हम कल्‍पना करें कि
हर कोई सुख चैन से रहेगा
और उन्‍हें कि‍सी का भय न होगा
.

If we’re to live up to our own time
Then victory won’t lie in the blade
But in all the bridges we’ve made
That is the promise to glade
The hill we climb
If only we dare

यद‍ि हम अपने समय के अनुसार जीना चाहते हैं
तो व‍िजय किसी तलवार में नहीं
बल्‍कि उन सेतुओं में बसी होगी जो हमने बनाए हैं
यह वचन है
उस पर्वत को हरा-भरा मैदान बनाने का
ज‍िस पर हम चढ़ते हैं
यदि‍ हम ह‍िम्‍मत ही जुटा पाएं तो

.

It’s because being American is more than a pride we inherit,
it’s the past we step into
and how we repair it

क्‍योंकि अमेरिकी होना हमें व‍िरासत में म‍िले अभ‍िमान से कहीं अध‍िक है
यह अतीत है ज‍िसमें हम उतरते हैं
और हम उसे क‍ैसे सुधारते हैं।

We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation
rather than share it
Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy
हमनें उस शक्‍ति को देखा है जो हमारे देश को साझा करने के बजाय
उसे चकनाचूर कर देती
जो हमारे देश को नष्‍ट कर देती
यद‍ि उसका उद्देश्‍य प्रजातंत्र को टालना था

.

And this effort very nearly succeeded
But while democracy can be periodically delayed
it can never be permanently defeated
In this truth
in this faith we trust
और यह प्रयास लगभग सफल हुआ
पर जबक‍ि लोकतंत्र को समय-समय पर टाला जा सकता है
उसे सदा के ल‍िए हराया नहीं जा सकता
इस सत्‍य में
इस श्रद्धा में
हमें व‍िश्‍वास है
.

For while we have our eyes on the future
history has its eyes on us
क्‍योंकि हमारी दृष्‍ट‍ि भव‍िष्‍य पर टि‍की है
और इत‍िहास की दृष्‍ट‍ि हम पर टि‍की है
.

This is the era of just redemption
We feared at its inception
We did not feel prepared to be the heirs
of such a terrifying hour

यह उद्धार का ह‍ी युग है
हम इसके आरम्‍भ से भयभीत थे
इस तरह आतंकित करने वाले समय के उत्‍तराधिकारी बनने के ल‍िए
हम उद्यत नहीं थे।

but within it we found the power
to author a new chapter
To offer hope and laughter to ourselves

किंतु इसके भीतर ही एक शक्‍त‍ि हमें म‍िल गयी
एक नया अध्‍याय ल‍िखने की
स्‍वयं को उम्‍मीद और हंसी देने की

.

So while once we asked,
how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe?
Now we assert
How could catastrophe possibly prevail over us?

तो जब एक बार हमने प्रश्‍न किया कि
हम इस व‍िपदा पर कैसे व‍िजय पाएंगे?
अब हम जोर देते हैं कि यह व‍िपदा हम पर कैसे व‍िजय पाएगी?

.

We will not march back to what was
but move to what shall be
A country that is bruised but whole,
benevolent but bold,
fierce and free

जो पहले था हम उस ओर नहीं बढ़ेगें
बल्‍क‍ि जो होगा उस ओर बढ़ेंगे
एक देश जो चोटि‍ल किंतु सम्‍पूर्ण है,
परोपकारी क‍िंतु साहसी है,
उग्र और स्‍वतंत्र है

.

We will not be turned around
or interrupted by intimidation
because we know our inaction and inertia
will be the inheritance of the next generation
Our blunders become their burdens

हमें डराने से पीछे मुड़ने
या बाधित होने वाले नहीं
क्‍योंकि हम जानते हैं हमारी अकर्मण्‍यता और जड़ता
अगली पीढ़ी की व‍िरासत होगी
हमारी गलतियां उनका बोझ बन जाएंगी
.

But one thing is certain:
If we merge mercy with might,
and might with right,
then love becomes our legacy
and change our children’s birthright

पर एक बात तो तय है
यद‍ि हम दयाभाव को शक्‍त‍ि से
और शक्‍त‍ि को औच‍ित्‍य से म‍िला दें
तो प्रेम हमारा उत्‍तरदान बन जाएगा
और हमारे बच्‍चों का जन्‍मस‍िद्ध अधिकार बदल देगा
.

So let us leave behind a country
better than the one we were left with
तो आओ हम अपने पीछे एक ऐसा देश छोड़ें
जो हमारे ल‍िए छोड़ें गये देश से बेहतर हो
.

Every breath from my bronze-pounded chest,
प्रहार झेल चुके मेरे सीने की हर सांस
.

we will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one
We will rise from the gold-limbed hills of the west,
हम इस घायल संसार को एक अद्भुत संसार के रूप में पालेंगे
हम पश्‍च‍िम के सुनहरे पर्वतों से उद‍ित होंगे

.

we will rise from the windswept northeast
where our forefathers first realized revolution
हम हवा से उड़ते हुए उस उत्‍तरपूर्व से उद‍ित होंगें
जहां हमारे पूर्वजों ने पहले पहल क्रांत‍ि को जाना था
.

We will rise from the lake-rimmed cities of the midwestern states,
we will rise from the sunbaked south
हम झील से घि‍रे मध्‍यपश्‍च‍िमी राज्‍यों से उद‍ित होंगे
हम सूरज से सिके हुए दक्ष‍िण से उद‍ित होंगे
.

We will rebuild, reconcile and recover
हम पुनन‍िर्माण करेंगे, पुनर्मिलन करेंगे, और उबरेंगे
.

and every known nook of our nation and
every corner called our country,
our people diverse and beautiful will emerge,
battered and beautiful

और हमारे देश का हर जाना-पहचाना कोना
और हर कोना जो हमारा देश कहलाता है
हमारे व‍िव‍िध और सुंदर लोग
आहत और सुंदर होकर उबरेंगें
.

When day comes we step out of the shade,
aflame and unafraid
The new dawn blooms as we free it
जब द‍िन उगता है हम छाया से बाहर न‍िकलते हैं
प्रज्‍वल‍ित और न‍िर्भय होकर
नयी सुबह ख‍िलती है जैसे ही हम उसे मुक्‍त करते हैं
.

For there is always light,
if only we’re brave enough to see it
If only we’re brave enough to be it
क्‍योंक‍ि वहां सदा प्रकाश है
यद‍ि हम उसे देखने का साहस रखते हैं तो
यद‍ि हम स्‍वयं वह प्रकाश बनने का साहस रखते हैं तो
